“The Yukon is where the wild west, untamed beauty, and the prospector spirit, meet in the northern light.”
The Yukon Territory
Your journey to the north takes us to a region seemingly untouched by humans. Vast icefields show no signs of modern life, and a look up the lake at night shows no lights. The Kluane region is home to bears, lynx, hare, wood bison, and moose. They roam freely through the trees and valleys of this special place called "Big Fish Lake", in Southern Tutchone.
We will take a small detour across the mountain ranges to the Pacific shores of Southeast Alaska. Together we will explore the ecosystem of the Chilkoot Valley and photograph Bears and Eagles as they feast on Salmon, in prepartion for winter.

Accommodation & Meals
Accomodations for this adventure are a bit of a mixed bag. At Fox Bay, we will be off grid. No cell phone and wood heat. We will use a generator for laptops and battery charging (and cpaps), and yes, there are real toilets...we aren't animals. The wood fired sauna 20 on the beach, the fire pit, and dense tree cover will quickly become your happy place.
In Haines, Alaska, we will be staying at a hotel in the middle of the village. We will be close to coffee shops and restaurants, but more importantly, we will be close to bears. Bears will be the focus of our time in Haines, and there will always be interesting finds around every corner.
Our last three nights on the road will be at Yukon Lake Cabins on the south shore of Kluane (Clue-On-ee) Lake. These rustic cabins and lodge are off grid and every morning presents the possibility of seeing wildlife close by. We have three days and nights that will be catered by our own personal chef.

Itinerary
DAY 1:
Meet up at the Sternwheeler hotel in Whitehorse at 9am. Depart for Fox Bay Retreat. We will stop at the Yukon Wildlife preserve for gear testing. We will continue on to Fox Bay where we will have lunch and spend the afternoon exploring. After a hearty supper, we will relax at the campfire and prepare for northern lights shooting from the beach.
DAY 2:
Your morning is your own. Get up early and spend some time discovering great photo opportunities around the property. In the afternoon, we will shoot using a neutral density filter on local streams and will always be on the hunt for wildlife. After supper, again, we will be prepared for northern lights.
DAY 3:
Early morning depart from Fox Bay. Today we will traveling to Skagway Alaska via the White Pass. We will have several stops along the way including the Emerald Lake and the Carcross desert. The White Pass is a destination all to itself and you will wish we had more time. After a picnic lunch in Skagway, we will take the Ferry to Haines, where we will stop for an hour or two to try and find some bears and eagles. We will spend the night in Haines.
DAY 4:
Today is bear day. We will get an early start to catch first light and bears as they feast on Salmon at the Chilkoot River. We will head back to Haines for lunch and to explore the town, and then back to the bears for the evening feast.
DAY 5:
This will be another early morning. Depending on how much bear activity we witness during the previous two days, we will either spend a couple of hours with bears or get an early start towards Kluane Lake. The drive from the Pacific coast of Haines, over the mountain pass to the Yukon, is one of the most beautiful drives in North America. There will be places to stop around every corner for wildlife and landscape photos. Our only goal today is to get to Kluane Lake by supper time, where our personal chef will have a catered meal waiting. With any luck, our day will be capped off with a fire on the beach and northern lights filling the sky
DAY 6:
Today you get to see something that most Canadians will never witness. We will be taking a charterd glacier flight to Mount Logan. Your pilot will land the plane on a glacier at 10,000 ft, at the base of Canada's tallest mountain. This is the highlight of the trip for almost everyone.
The rest of our day will be spent looking for wildlife and exploring the area east side of Kluane Lake, followed by another round of night sky shooting.
DAY 7:
Our last full day together will be spent exploring Sheep Mountain and looking for wildlife along the Alaska highway corridor. Today will be a much slower pace with opportunities to relax a little and prepare for the last chance at northern lights.
DAY 8:
Later start today. We will depart camp by 10am and head toward Whitehorse. Our estimated time of arrival will be 2pm and there may be a few stops along the way for landscape photos and some wildlife.

What our guests say
I have been on several photography trips with Greg Johnson and each time has been a wonderful adventure! From the accommodations to the very diversified itinerary and everything in between, Greg plans each trip with the intent of providing his guests with the best photographic opportunities available. I have come away from each trip with a treasure trove of photographs and memories.
I have had the opportunity to do several of Greg's camera adventure tours. From start to finish it is non stop excitement, laughter and unforgettable moments. Greg's energy, his passion for capturing that perfect photograph and teachings are second to none. My husband joined us on one of the Newfoundland excursions and had a fabulous time. The friendships you gain, the photographs you will take and memories you will make are priceless.
I had the opportunity to participate in Greg's Adventure Tour to Tanzania and if I had to express this trip in one word, it would be "magical". We were able to become one with nature and observe without being intrusive. Greg's guidance and encouragement helped me achieve beautiful photographic memories that will last a lifetime.
